Shipping Industry & Economy - Environment `Govt will examine Clemenceau and submit report to SC' Our Bureau
New Delhi , Jan. 19 THE Government will examine the French ship Clemenceau, whose entry into Indian shores is being opposed by environmentalists, for presence of any toxic matter and submit a report to the Supreme Court, the Environment Minister, Mr A. Raja, said here. However, the matter would be decided by the Supreme Court and the Government would abide by it, he added. The Government is also considering making safety norms for workers engaged in the asbestos-related industry stricter, he said. "We will physically examine the ship for presence of any hazardous waste as cargo and submit a report to the Supreme Court before it is slated to hear the case," Mr Raja told newspersons here at the sixth Social Editors Conference on Social Sector. The ship had left France in December for a ship-breaking yard in Gujarat amid protests from the environmental group Greenpeace, which says it contains tonnes of toxic waste that could harm scrap workers. Mr Raja said that the Government is finalising a national environment policy aimed at mainstreaming environmental concerns in all developmental activities. "The draft policy has been put on the Web site of Environment Ministry three months back," he said.
