A farmer chopping sugarcane in near Madurai in Tamil Nadu. With assured prices and market, sugarcane continues to be the most attractive crop for farmers in the country. Sugarcane production in Tamil Nadu is estimated to be about 200 lakh tonnes against 181 lakh tonnes projected initially. Sugar prices have touched a 15-year high in the global market on short supply and diversion of cane for ethanol in Brazil.
