Foreign Direct Investment Marketing - Retailing Left parties plan to enlist traders' support to oppose FDI in retail Our Bureau
New Delhi , Jan 27 STRONGLY opposing the Government's decision to allow 51 per cent FDI in retail trade for single brand goods, the Left Parties have decided to contact the retail trade merchants' organisations and appeal to them for organising a countrywide protest action against this step. A statement issued after a meeting of the Left Parties today said that this move was a precursor to fully opening up the retail trade to foreign companies. "The Left parties had submitted a note in November 2005 to the UPA-left Co-ordination Committee arguing against such a move. Without replying to this note, the Government had gone ahead," the statement said. The statement issued by Left Parties said that it was "surprising" that the Government had taken this decision within a few days of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) session in Hyderabad. In the AICC resolution on economic affairs, in the section pertaining to retail trade, there was no mention of allowing FDI in this sector. "Despite this the Government took this step," the statement said. Senior leaders of the Left Parties who attended today's meeting include Mr A.B. Bardhan, Mr Prakash Karat, Mr Debabrata Biswas, Mr D. Raja, Mr Pallab Sengupta, and Mr Devarajan.
