Shipping Kochi port users oppose move to hike charges V. Sajeev Kumar
Kochi , Jan. 31 THE Tariff Authority for Major Ports (TAMP) convened a joint hearing with the shipping fraternity in Kochi port to discuss the proposals of the port as well as the container terminal operator, India Gateway Terminal (IGT), on their decision to increase port related charges. The port management had proposed the introduction of container storing and cargo supervision charges at Ernakulam wharf, Mattancherry wharf and at the container freight station (CFS) owned by the port. The port had recommended a fee of Rs 200 for 20-feet containers and Rs 400 for 40-feet container as part of the cargo supervision work, storage charges and ground rent charges for containers at CFS and at the wharf similar to the present scale of rates in the terminal. The proposal from the IGT is to levy charges for storage planning, lashing and unlashing of containers and supervision services for its operations at the port. However, there was some stiff opposition from the port users at the joint hearing convened by the TAMP Chairman, Mr A.L. Bongirwar. According to port users, the rates for various port related charges applicable in Kochi are currently on the higher side compared to neighbouring ports and any move to increase it again, would be detrimental for the smooth operations in the port. The TAMP officials recorded the statements and asked the IGT and port officials to come out with clarification and details on the proposals. The revision of charges will be based on the final decision of the TAMP.
