STCL in a fix over cured vanilla beans' disposal

G.K. Nair

Kochi , Feb. 2

STCL Ltd, which has completed procurement of three tonnes of cured vanilla beans as a market intervention exercise, appears to be in a dilemma about its further disposal.

It has procured three tonnes of A-grade cured beans at Rs 45 lakh (Rs 1,500 a kg) and it is stored in the office itself. The procured beans belonged to the 2004-05 crop and, hence, its proper storage and timely marketing is important. The normal shelf life of cured beans, according to industry sources here, is two years. Further delay in its marketing might affect the quality, especially the flavour profile, they pointed out.

STCL Ltd sources told Business Line that it was planning to use the beans for extraction of vanillin at a private extraction plant in Hyderabad.

According to Spices Board sources, food-flavouring companies in the UK and US could be potential buyers for the product from STCL Ltd. But it would have to extract vanillin and then send samples to the buyers for checking the flavour profile. "If the sample is accepted then they would buy," they said.

The vanilla prices, of late, are showing an upward swing and, hence, STCL might be able to market its product at remunerative prices.
