Plans for a bigger terminal

G. Gurumurthy

With the Coimbatore airport experiencing a boom in passenger traffic and flight services, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) is keen to expand the existing terminal building at the airport, besides the proposed construction of a new terminal complex.

There are plans to make provisions for an arrival lounge on the southern side of the terminal building, and convert the entire passenger terminal space as the departure lounge.

The expansion of the existing terminal building is expected to get over in a year. About 90 acres of land are needed for the proposed terminal complex of international standards. While the AAI Coimbatore has already acquired 50 acres, it needs 40 more. This is besides the 80-odd acres it requires for the runway expansion.

More air links to Coimbatore are also on the cards. Besides Silk Air and Kingfisher, Air India is keen to introduce its service to Coimbatore. Air India is believed to have approached the AAI for introducing the bigger Airbus 310 aircraft on the Coimbatore sector, possibly linking it with an international route.
