Aquaculture West Bengal spots areas to breed ornamental fish Our Bureau
Kolkata. Feb. 3 WEST Bengal has identified Howrah, North 24 - Parganas and Dinajpur for farming of ornamental fish. The State tops in ornamental fish exports. Addressing the India International Seafood Show - 2006 organised jointly by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and the Seafood Exporters Association of India, the State Fisheries Minister, Mr Kiranmay Nanda, said that to promote sea fishing the State Government has developed five new fishing harbours. The six one is under construction and will be operational soon. The State has 158 km long coastline dotted with creeks. The coastline also include world's largest delta at the Sunderbans. "The geographical conditions opens up wide prospects of farming and exports of a wide variety of marine products and seafood. The creeks and especially the Sunderban estuary is the natural breeding ground of marine products," Mr Nanda said. Expressed his dissatisfaction at the sluggish growth in marine products exports, the Minister identified that overlapping responsibilities of union ministries of food-processing, agriculture and commerce comes in the way of focussed attention towards this sector.
