Soyameal exports may top 22 lakh t by March-end

M.R. Subramani

Chennai , Feb. 3

SOYAMEAL exports from the country could touch 22 lakh tonnes (lt) by March-end, even as enquiries are coming in for delivery in April.

Between October and December, at least 10 lt soyameal have been shipped. Last month, nearly 4.75 lt was exported and this month, at least 4.5 lt could be shipped, according to Mr Rajesh Agrawal, Chairman, Soyabean Processors Association of India.

Mr Sandeep Bajoria, President, COOIT, said oilmeal exports in general were doing well during the current fiscal. "During April-December, 24.2 lt of oilmeals have been exported against 19.5 lt during the same period a year ago. Of this, soyameal has accounted for 16.4 lt," he said.

Earlier this week, a multinational firm bought 10,000 tonnes of soyameal for $207-208 f.o.b. "Prices are currently ruling at Rs 9,200-300 a tonne free on rail," Mr Agrawal said.

Exports have been mainly to Far-East destinations such as China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and Japan.

"Exports have been good and crushing of bean has also been good," Mr Bajoria said.

"Shipments have also been made to Pakistan and Bangladesh. We could roughly export two lt to both these countries, the same as last year," Mr Agrawal said.

However, non-availability of railway wagons for export to Pakistan was a concern. "Some exporters have resorted to shipping the consignments by sea," Mr Agrawal said.

Soyabean arrivals, on the other hand, are currently 1.4 lakh bags a day.

Prices are currently Rs 1,190 a quintal in Indore, the soyabean sector's hub.
