The Hindu Business Line : Satyam wins $150-m pie of GM order

SATYAM Computer Services Ltd has bagged a $150-million (Rs 650 crore) five-year deal from General Motors through a partnership with Tier-I vendors Hewlett Packard and Capgemini, according to Mr Subu D. Subramanian, Director and Senior Vice-President, Satyam.

The announcement came a day after Wipro Ltd said it expects to realise revenues exceeding $300 million (over Rs 1,300 crore) from a five-year IT outsourcing contract from the American automobile company.

Speaking to newspersons through videoconference from Detroit, US, Mr Subramanian said Satyam has been working directly with GM for the last five years, and this relationship would continue. And through the indirect deal the company would undertake "ongoing maintenance of applications in business areas" for GM. The number of people to be employed for this deal is yet to be finalised, he said.

On Thursday, GM awarded contracts to a number of Tier-1 information technology vendors to provide systems integration services to its extended global enterprise over the next five years. The awards to EDS, HP, Capgemini, IBM, Compuware Covisint and Wipro were essential elements of GM's future information technology programme. This initiative was driven by the ending of a 10-year split-off agreement with EDS that expires in June 2006, according to information available on GM's Web site.

GM would spend about $15 billion over the next five years, and around 50 per cent of the spending is being awarded to systems integrators. Of the five-year contracts being awarded, EDS will continue to have the most business at GM but somewhat less than today, while HP and Capgemini will increase their existing business. IBM, Compuware Covisint and Wipro will continue to be strategic IT partners to GM, according to information on the Web site.
