Beyond GDP

This is with reference to "The need to look beyond GDP," (Business Line, February 6).

The author has rightly pointed out that the rapid growth rate could increase rich-poor disparity.

And it may not reflect in the goods alone. Technology development is crucial to reach world-class manufacturing standards. Kerala is often quoted for its achievements in human development irrespective of a lower GDP rate. So investment in social infrastructure is necessary. A balanced growth of all sectors is essential.

In this context, the article "Getting a taste of Indian village life," (Business Line, February 6) is also relevant.

GDP growth should bring all-round development. If we use the present indicators correctly we may be able to take corrective action.

A . Jacob Sahayam
