Telecommunications CDMA operators add 1.4 m subscribers in Jan Our Bureau
New Delhi , Feb. 7 CODE Division Multiple Access (CDMA)-based telecom operators have added 1.4 million new subscribers in January taking its total user base to 24.6 million. Of this, 1.1 million have been added in the mobile segment, 2.24 lakh in the fixed wireless and the rest through wire line. Reliance Infocomm has added the maximum number of new subscribers with over a million new users taking the total to over 17 million. This also includes the 65,000 GSM subscribers in the eastern part of the country. According to numbers released by the Association of Unified Service Providers of India (AUSPI), CDMA operators have shown a monthly growth of 5.87 per cent in January compared to the previous month .The growth in fixed wireless segment was 3.68 per cent. "The growth noticed in January was despite many constraints faced by AUSPI's members including delays in provision of points of interconnection, lack of spectrum, high taxes and levies, continued payment of Access Deficit Charge and delayed SACFA clearances. We expect subscriber additions in the coming months to be more, if adequate spectrum is released to our members and there is no delay in SACFA clearance and provision of points of interconnection," AUSPI said. The association added that the growth in last few months shows that achievement of the Government's target of 250 million telephones by the year 2007 was possible. Yesterday, the GSM-based operators had reported an addition of more than 3 million new subscribers.
