Trade & Labour Unions M&M Zaheerabad plant workers issue strike notice Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Feb. 8 THE automotive major Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd has announced that the workers of its Zaheerabad plant in Andhra Pradesh have issued a notice to the management on February 1 that they would resort to a strike after 15 days in case an agreement was not reached by the company on their charter of demands. In a press release here, the company said the notice comes pursuant to the ongoing negotiations for a new wage settlement. The last long-term settlement between the management and workers ended on July 31, 2005. The Zaheerabad unit produces light commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and a variant of utility vehicles for Mahindra. The company said the management was asking for certain improvements in productivity, quality and discipline, which were critical for the long-term economic viability of any unit. Importantly, these demands are in line with the current practices of the Indian automobile industry, the company said. The M&M management has, in return assured the union that it is willing to offer an attractive financial package, which would comprehensively cater to the long-term interests of the workers. M&M's Zaheerabad unit was acquired from Allwyn Nissan in 1994 and is in the process of being nursed back to financial health. At the time of takeover, the accumulated losses of Mahindra Nissan Ltd were Rs 54 crore. Since takeover, Mahindra has invested over Rs 175 crore and launched several new models for making the plant viable. To meet growing market demand for its utility vehicles, the company has modernised the Primer booth in the Paintshop and upgraded it in April last year.
