Mumbai , Feb. 9 THE Taiwan-based Gigabyte Technology, one of the top five manufacturers of motherboards in the world, has decided to make India one of the hubs for its Asia-Pacific operations. Already the company is in the process of acquiring 10 acres of land in Goa, said a statement from the company. The company is looking at making substantial investments in manufacturing and R&D in India, said Mr Richard Ma, Executive Vice-President, Gigabyte Technology Co Ltd, at a news conference here on Thursday.Initially, Gigabyte India will take up manufacturing of its products for domestic consumption and will further expand to supplement its global operations. With steady capacity build-up, this plant may also take up contract manufacturing for other global brands. Gigabyte entered India about four years ago with an exclusive distribution tie-up with D-Link (India) Ltd for selling motherboards. In August 2005, this tie-up was converted into a joint venture Gigabyte Technology (India) Ltd with equity participation from both D-Link (India) Ltd and Gigabyte Technology Co Ltd. The company entered the consumer market with the launch of laptops and a range of peripherals such as optical drives, LCD monitors, mouse, keyboard, flash disk (pen drive), etc. According to the company, it has sold 2,000 laptops in the last six months. Gigabyte Technology also announced the launch of wide screen laptops based on Intel Napa platform and dual core processors for the first time in India.
