THE Maharashtra Government has asked all energy utilities supplying power to Mumbai region to prepare a plan for power saving measures.
"We want to reduce the power consumption by 20 per cent for next four months, in view of the power crisis in the State," said Mr Dilip Walse Patil, Energy Minister, Maharashtra. He was addressing the media after chairing a meeting with the energy utility companies of Mumbai.
Mr Patil said to prevent distress load shedding in Mumbai, the utilities would prepare their own plans in one week and the Government would meet again to chalk out a common agenda.
The power load management plan should also be prepared by Tata Power, Reliance Energy Ltd (REL), Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) Undertaking and not just by the utilities of State Government, Mr Patil said.
"Currently, there is no need to carry out load shedding for Mumbai region. But there is a dire need to undertake power saving measures. We want to initiate these measures before an emergency arises," Mr Patil said.
The joint decisions of the power companies and State Government would be communicated to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Also addressing the media, Mr S.S. Kshatriya, General Manager, BEST Undertaking, said power saving could be done by discontinuing illumination of public buildings and hoardings in the city. Moreover, innovative methods like giving financial incentives for lower use of power and disincentive for excess use of power could also be considered. To save power it is not necessary to resort to load shedding. Other methods could also be used, Mr Kshatriya said.
