Water Call to fix norms for national drinking water security Our Bureau
New Delhi , Feb. 11 WITH a view to ensure safe drinking water in the country, there is an urgent need for a national regulatory framework that involves active participation of panchayats and village knowledge centres, renowned scientist Dr M.S. Swaminathan has said. "We must ensure national drinking water security through proper regulation," he said addressing a symposium organised by Indian National Academy of Sciences here. He said factors such as proper regulation, knowledge connectivity, widespread social awareness and greater involvement of panchayats held the key to achieving such security, and suggested revitalisation of the National Water Quality Assessment Authority. Stressing on framing a regulatory set-up for drinking water norms on a priority basis, he said that India could develop its own model drawing on those existing in developed countries including the US.
