New Delhi , Feb. 14

MULTINATIONAL port operator P&O Ports, headquartered in London, has applied for permission to offer containerised services on Indian Railways' tracks. It has applied for the "universal category licence" with a registration fee of Rs 50 crore.

P&O Ports offers cargo handling and port management services in Europe, US , South America, Asia, Africa and Australia. The company is reportedly being acquired by Dubai Ports World.

"Six players have already applied till date — four in the Rs 50-crore (all India category) and two in the Rs 10-crore category," said senior officials, who added that Railways has garnered Rs 220 crore till date.

At least two-three applicants are expected on Wednesday, which is the last day for applications.

JM Baxi & Co and Pipavav Rail Corporation Ltd (PRCL) have applied for the category-3 licence to offer services from the ports of Pipavav, Mundra, Chennai/Ennore, Vizag and Kochi with hinterland. They have paid a registration fee of Rs 10 crore to the Railways.

Applicants in the Rs 50-crore category include Container Corporation of India, Gateway Distriparks Ltd and P&O Ports. The fee for JNPT/Mumbai port and national capital region (NCR) connectivity is Rs 50 crore and this includes permission to operate on all other routes. Railways had defined three other route categories, each with licence fee of Rs 10 crore.
