New Projects Agri-Biz & Commodities - Sugar West Bengal CM lays foundation stone for Shree Renuka Sugars' refinery in Haldia Ambar Singh Roy
Haldia , Feb. 18 THE West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, today laid the foundation stone of the Rs 250-crore sugar refinery being set up by Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd at the industrial township of Haldia, about 150 km from here. Said to become the "single-largest sugar manufacturing plant in India", the sugar refinery would have a capacity to manufacture 2,000 tonnes of refined sugar per day. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bhattacharjee said most of the cane used as the basic input at the plant would be imported from Brazil and Thailand. Besides selling the sugar that would be manufactured at the plant in the domestic market, Renuka Sugars would also carry out exports through Haldia port. The plant would provide direct employment to 250 people. Mr Bhattacharjee said the State Government was encouraging investment in the food-processing sector in a big way. "In addition to producing different varieties of fruits in huge quantities, West Bengal produces 116 lakh tonnes of vegetables every year. A major portion of this is wasted due to lack of processing and storage facilities. With adequate processing facilities, not only can such wastage be stopped but farmers too can be assured of a remunerative price for their produce," he said. In his address, the Managing Director of Shree Renuka Sugars, Mr Narendra Murkumbi, said that, in the years ahead, the company would focus on forging "backward economic linkages" with the agricultural sector in West Bengal.
