Consensus on irrigation projects needed: AP CM

Hyderabad , Feb. 19

THE Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has called for a broad political consensus on irrigation issues.

This would facilitate accelerated completion and benefits reaching the needy, he said.

Claiming that budgetary allocations were as high as Rs 3,398 crore for irrigation projects during the past 21 months of the Congress (I) Government rule in Telangana alone (compared to Rs 734 crore during the nine year TDP rule), Dr Reddy said 30 major and 18 minor irrigation projects have already been taken up by the Government.

During the current fiscal, the budgetary allocation for irrigation was Rs 6,378 crore. The objective is to provide water to 73.18 lakh acres, which means doubling the area under irrigation, which was just 72.43 lakh acres till 2004, he added.

The budget for 2006-07 to be presented in the Assembly on Monday would lay a solid foundation for the all-round development of the State in irrigation, infrastructure creation in rural and urban areas, a release from the Chief Minister's Office said.

The Chief Minister would also recommence the Irrigation Mission by visiting Alisagar project in Nizamabad on March 5 to review the ongoing works. He would also visit Gutpa lift irrigation in the district, Gundlakamma and Veligonda in Prakasam, Totapalli and Jhanjhavati in Vizianagaram, under the mission.

While making efforts to revive the rural economy, the Government would go all out to attract investments in industry, IT and infrastructure creation in urban areas. The FAB City, expansion of Steel Plant and development of refineries being examples, he said.
