DoT for lowering cost of telecom operations

New Delhi , Feb. 20

IN a bid to bring down telecom tariffs further, the Government is working towards lowering the cost incurred by the operators. Currently, Indian telecom operators are among the highest payers of taxes and levies in the world even though the tariffs are at the lowest level.

Speaking at the GLOBALCOMM India 2006, Mr J.S. Sarma, Secretary, Department of Telecom, said, "We are working toward lowering the overall cost in telecommunication sector and calls will be more cheaper so as to make it more consumer-friendly." Operators pay levies such as licence fee, spectrum charges and service tax, which adds to their cost of offering services.

On the issue of convergence, Mr Sarma said, "Global broadband is a major growth driver for the telecom industry. We are seeing the emergence of a new world order, which requires integration of IT and telecom networks. Digital adoption is evolving rapidly. There is a need to make it easier for consumers and businesses to adopt broadband solutions."

Mr Roberto Blois, Deputy Secretary-General International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Switzerland, said, "We are concerned with the development of three major sectors — radio communication, standardisation and development."

He also said that world leaders had agreed to connect all the world's villages to ICT by 2015.

Mr Kanwalinder Singh, President of India and SAARC, Qualcomm, said, "Year 2005 has been a year of milestone - record growth in subscriber, device volumes and innovative services from CDMA operators that have redefined market dynamics for the entire wireless industry."

A number of telecom companies including Ericsson, Kyocera, Tata Teleservices, BSNL are participating in this year's exhibition. Seminars on topics such as broadband services, wireless services, policy and regulations, IPTV and content, and IP services and quality is are also being held simultaneously.
