ONGC flows oil from D1 field — To spend Rs 500 cr on development schemes

Richa Mishra

New Delhi , Feb. 20

OIL and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has successfully flown oil from the D1 field at the western offshore. The field, which was discovered during the same time as the Bombay High in 1976, was left dormant by oil pundits as they thought it was not feasible, an ONGC executive said.

Since last year the company has again started concentrating on this field because of volatility in the international market and to increase its own production. The first well has flown oil on February 8. The well is expected to flow close to 3,000 barrels per day of oil, he told Business Line. D1 field is part of the Bassein and satellite assets. It is the most distant field from the shore.

The field is 200 km southwest from Mumbai and has an aerial extent of 225 sq. km. The oil from the field would be taken to Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd, the official said, adding that it was sweet crude.

The Bassein block is primarily known for sour gas. ONGC has now embarked on the development phase of the field, which would be implemented in two parts. The company proposes to spend a little over Rs 500 crore on the development scheme.

Development mode: In the first phase, three wells would be developed, while three more would be developed in the second phase. The first well has flown oil and the company is hopeful that by May this year the second well would also be flowing oil. Out of the three wells being targeted in the first phase, the company is expecting 9,000 barrels per day of oil.

The company has set a target to get 18,000 barrels per day of oil from the field. The total in-place reserve of crude oil is more than 19 mmt of which 4.45 mmt is recoverable.

ONGC has been looking at increasing production with the implementation of development schemes in several fields.

ONGC does not require the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons certification for the finds as these are the marginal fields.
