DR B.N. Suresh, Director of the Indian Space Research Organisation's launch vehicle activity hub, the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, has been elected by consensus to head a sub-committee of the UN body on space.
A joint Asian nominee, Dr Suresh is the first technical expert from a developing country to be this year's Chairman of the Science and Technology sub-committee of the UN Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN-COPOUS). The election is an important recognition of ISRO's achievements in the development of space science and technology as well as social applications, a release said.
The 69-member UN-COPOUS was formed in early 1960s. The sub-committee, which focuses on international cooperation in applications of space technology, is currently holding its annual session in Vienna.
Dr Suresh has been leading the Indian delegation to the space sub-committee for the last three years.
