THE President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, on Tuesday urged more Indian companies to make it to the Fortune 500 list by becoming brand institutions.

He said that righteousness and indomitable spirit are the key qualities that make a corporate brand or an institution.

Speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the All India Management Association (AIMA), Dr Kalam said there are five Indian companies in the Fortune 500 list, whereas China has 15 with a similar population.

"Promoting excellence in organisations leading to the creation of brand institutions depends on five important components," he said. "They are design capability, competitiveness in the contemporary market, organisational transformation for continual innovation, success or failure management and establishment of institutional ethical standards."

Stressing on the design capability "ingredient," he said that such a capability is the key to acquire a competitive edge. Speaking on the success or failure management component, he said, "The leader gives the credit for success to those who worked for it, and the leader absorbs and owns responsibility for the failure. This is leadership."
