Mumbai , Feb. 21

VENKATESHWARA Hatcheries Ltd has been served a show-cause notice by the District Collector of Nandurbar, seeking an explanation why action should not be taken against the company for allegedly sourcing bird flu-affected chickens from two poultries in Navapur.

"We are seeking information about disease incidents, transportation, supply and culling of the chicken owned by the company,'' said Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, Chief Minister, Maharashtra, while addressing the media here on Tuesday.

Mr Deshmukh said that there is inconsistency as far as the actual number of birds being independently culled by poultry owners of Navapur area is concerned. Therefore, such notices are being served to all poultry farm owners in the infected zone.

"Every farm maintains the record about the poultry stocks and their movement. We are confiscating the records and investigating it further," Mr Deshmukh said.

There is also discrepancy over the number of birds culled by the State Government since the outbreak. On Monday, Mr Uttam Khobragade, Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Maharashtra Government, had claimed that seven lakh chickens have been culled since the outbreak. However, Mr Deshmukh said that only 1.5 lakh birds have been culled so far.
