Beijing hiking alumina, copper capacity

G. Chandrashekhar

Mumbai , March 5

China's alumina production capacity is expected to rise to 21 million tonnes (mt) a year by the end of 2010 following the scheduled completion of a number of domestic expansion projects, according to China's National Development and Reforms Commission (NDRC).

While the current ongoing alumina expansion projects in the country have a combined capacity of 12.5 mt, expansion capacity planned, but not yet under construction, have a capacity of 3.2 mt.

NDRC has estimated that total alumina capacity in China would reach 11.3 mt a year in 2006, 17.5 mt a year in 2007 and 21 mt a year by the end of 2010.

Copper

China is expected to see copper smelting capacity rise to 3.7 mt a year by 2007 due to plans for expansion in the industry.

There currently are 18 copper expansion projects in progress and/or planned for the next few years, with a combined capacity of approximately 2.05 mt a year.

Of these, 11 are currently in progress with a total capacity of 1.15 mt a year. Another seven projects are planned with a total smelting capacity of 900,000 tonnes a year.

However, NDRC cautioned that the smelting capacity would be far in excess of copper concentrate supply, and the industry is expected to face serious feed supply issues in the future.
