AWB to start loading wheat shipment on March 8

Our Bureau

Chennai , March 5

AWB Ltd, Australia's monopoly wheat marketing body, will begin loading the first consignment of wheat for India on Wednesday.

The initial 25,000-30,000 tonnes shipment will reach the Indian shores before the end of this month, as stipulated in the tender floated by the State Trading Corporation (STC) on behalf of the Centre.

The port of discharge will be made known to AWB before the ship crosses Singapore.

This is part of the tender norms, which also gives 15 days time to the Centre to nominate the discharge port once the vessel gives notice.

1.5 lt expected next week

At least 1.5 lakh tonnes (lt) of the five lt of wheat planned to be imported by the Union Government duty-free are expected to reach the country before middle of April.

AWB was the lowest bidder in the tender floated by STC. The Australian body was also the one to come forward to supply the entire five lakh tonnes.

Ever since the Union Government decided on February 2 to go in for imports to rein in rising wheat prices, Australia was seen as enjoying an advantage since the shipments were to southern States.

The tender, seeking crop of the current season (2005-06) from any origin for import in "loose bulk" form, closed on February 20 and it was finalised on March 1.

The shipments would arrive till May into Chennai (one lt), Tuticorin (one lt), Visakhapatnam (70,000 tonnes), Mangalore (1.1 lt) and Kochi (1.2 lt).
