Is Westport Malaysia going to assist Indian ports by way of transfer of technology and management? At least two offers are being finalised, if the reports doing the rounds are to be believed. Malaysia, it is also reported, is keen that direct trade and shipping services between the two countries develop, a move which would boost foreign exchange earnings for the country and provide a boost to the port industry.

The reports also suggest that the Malaysian ports are vying for more direct trade with India in preference to the present system of routing cargo through Singapore.

Westport Malaysia top brass was recently quoted as saying that about 1.5 million TEUs came from India to Malaysia every year via Singapore. Not surprisingly. Malaysia, for example, buys nearly 300 million ringgit worth of onions, which would go to Singapore first.
