Oilseeds & Edible Oil Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Oilmeal exports reach new high G. Chandrashekhar
Mumbai , March 6 After seven years, export of oilmeals or oilseed extractions is likely to exceed 40 lakh tonnes (lt) during the current fiscal. It was as far back as 1997-98 that the country exported 42 lt of various extractions, after which export volumes had been lower and erratic. Soyabean meal is the star performer this year too as in previous years, although notable contribution has been made by rapeseed meal and castorseed extraction too. As per export data released by the Solvent Extractors Association of India, shipments of all oilmeals during the period April 2005 to February 2006 aggregated 36.1 lt, sharply up from 24.4 lt during corresponding period last year. Talking to Business Line today, Mr Rajesh Agrawal, Chairman of Indore-based Soyabean Processors Association of India pointed out that in February soyameal shipments totalled a massive 5.7 lt and for the 11 months of the fiscal the figure was 28.4 lt. He was sanguine that in March, soyameal shipments would be around 3.5 lt taking the total for the year to over 30 lt. As per the data, in the first 11 months rapeseed meal shipments were 4.8 lt, while groundnut meal and ricebran extractions registered over one lakh tonnes each. Castorseed meal showed phenomenal performance with shipment of 1.9 lt during the period, a big jump from 70,700 tonnes during the first 11 months of 2004-05.
