Wet climes forecast for the South

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , March 14

Incoming tropical easterly waves affecting the South of the country, counterparts of the extra-tropical western disturbances of the Northwest, are interacting with the prevailing westerly trough from the North, setting off cloudiness over most of the peninsula.

The cloudiness is pronouncedly intense towards the east of the region, said Dr K.J. Ramesh of the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF). Forecasts indicate a wet session that could stretch over for at least the next three to four days.

An NCMRWF forecast said that rainfall/thunderstorm/hailstorm of light to moderate intensity could be expected for at least the next three days over parts of Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh in East Peninsular India; East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in Central India and over the eastern Indian states of Orissa and West Bengal.

Meanwhile, Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Rayalaseema and Northeast India continued to receive light to moderate rainfall during the last 24 hours ending Tuesday morning. This was a result of the same westerly trough having interacted with the existing pre-monsoon thunderstorms. This rainfall activity is likely to persist till Thursday.

The NCMRWF has maintained its forecast for a `wet Holi' for most of the Northwest and Central India where light showers have been forecast for Wednesday (March 15). There is a good possibility that another trough of westerlies could be approaching the Northwest by Sunday next, it added.

But, according to Dr Ramesh, this system could at best be of moderate intensity (as against the `active' westerly system now affecting the North).
