The tripartite committee that was formed to end the four-day agitation by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) workers in early February has not had a single meeting till date. This committee was to look into the issue of airport modernisation and the consequent effect on AAI workers.

The non-convening of the committee meeting has prompted the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Mr Prakash Karat, to write to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, urging the Government to put in abeyance its decision to hand over the Delhi and Mumbai airports to private parties till the report of the committee is finalised.

The decision to form a tripartite committee, which has representation from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Airports Authority of India and the AAI Joint Workers Forum, was taken after a meeting with the Prime Minister, who had to intervene to end the impasse at airports across the country.

The Government has selected a consortium headed by the GMR group to modernise the Delhi airport while a consortium headed by the GVK group has been shortlisted for modernising the Mumbai airport. Both consortia have submitted the Rs 500-crore enhanced bid bond to AAI.

Asked for his comments, the General Secretary of AITUC and Member of Parliament, Mr Gurudas Dasgupta, said it appeared that the Government was soft-pedalling on the issue of workers' interests.
