Spices & Condiments Campco seeks more import curbs on areca Our Bureau
Mangalore , March 17 Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd has said the domestic arecanut market can be improved further, provided the Union Government takes more measures to curb imports. In a press release here, Mr S.R. Rangamurthy, Campco President, said some people import arecanut `for extracting tannin' from the commodity. It is mandatory to export the equal quantity of arecanut after extracting tannin from it. However, that is not being done. The imported stocks are being sold in the domestic market, affecting the growers here. Quality should be kept in mind if the Government wants to permit arecanut imports, he said. In this regard, the Government can take the help of Central Plantation Crops Research Institute or the Central Food Technological Research Institute. The Government can release arecanut containers from the ports after they are certified by CPCRI and CFTRI, he said. He urged the Union Commerce Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, to consider these points to improve the domestic market. Following a request by Campco, the Union Government has now stopped issuing advance licence for arecanut import.
