New Delhi , March 17

In a move to control the wheat prices, Food Corporation of India would be releasing additional 50,000 tonnes of wheat in March under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS).

The wheat would be directed towards six States — three in North and three in South. The Department of Food would also be considering further releases under the OMSS in April.

While 20,000 tonnes of wheat will be released for Delhi; 10,000 tonnes will be released for Haryana; 5,000 tonnes will be released for four States each — Jammu & Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

With this additional release of 50,000 tonnes, the total releases during January 2006 to March so far are 6.98 lakh tonnes, said an official release.

While open market wheat prices have started softening in the northern States, the prices are relatively high in the southern States, it added.
