Spices & Condiments Plea to set up chilli board in Guntur Our Bureau
Guntur , March 17 The Guntur district administration, along with the trade and farmers, is organising a meeting here on March 23 to make out a case for setting up a separate board for chillies, as it is the largest producing and trading centre. At present, the commodity is under the purview of the Kerala-based Spices Board and there is only a branch office of the Spices Board here. The trade as well as chilli farmers have been urging the Union Commerce Ministry for a long time to set up a board exclusively for chillies here along the lines of the Tobacco Board. Participants at the meeting will include Mr Jairam Ramesh, economist and the Congress economic cell secretary and Ms D. Purandareswari, Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development. A number of cold storage units, more than 80, have come up in and around Guntur during the past 10 years, as the chilli is prone to price fluctuations. It is anticipated that the number may touch, or even cross, the hundred-mark soon, with the encouragement being given to agri processing units by the Union Government. The owners of the cold storage units will also be involved in the meeting.
