Environment Energy projects: ITC to apply for carbon credits Mohan Padmanabhan
Kolkata , March 18 The CDM (clean development mechanism) energy projects of ITC Ltd are bearing fruit. They have been hosted on the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Control) Web site for stakeholder comments. In addition, "reforestation of severely degraded land under social forestry in Khammam district of AP" is another project covering an area of 4,773 hectares in 14 mandals, witnessing validation by BVQI. Talking to Business Line, Mr Pradeep Dhobale, CEO of the Paperboards and Specialty Papers Division (PSPD), said the forestry CDM project sequesters on an average 50,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. He said the company was applying for carbon credits under CDM. Some eight energy projects (in areas such as energy conservation, heat recovery, bio-mass etc) have enabled ITC-PSPD to generate 10 lakh CERs (Certified Emission Reductions), Mr Dhobale said and added that validations of all the projects have been completed and are due for registration with UNFCCC. He said the Bhadrachalam unit continues to be among the most energy-efficient in its category in the world with a consumption of 33.3 giga joules of energy per tonne of paperboard produced. Asked on the social forestry front, Mr Dhobale said ITC-PSPD, as on date, has planted more than 42,000 ha with 161 million saplings, over a period of 16 years.
Social, agro forestry
According to Mr Dhobale, the company's social and farm forestry plantations of 42,000 ha have created direct employment for 4.2 lakh people by way of nursery, planting & maintenance, logging and transport activities etc. ITC has planned to achieve 1 lakh ha of plantations by this decade, and has also joined the Andhra Pradesh Government's poverty alleviation programme titled "Indira Kranthi Pathakam" , and has raised nearly 1,500 ha plantations in two years' time. "Our presence in the pulp-based value chain provides the basis for enlarged contribution through promotion of agro forestry."
