Mangalore , March 19

The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy, has said that the State Government is committed on formulating an integrated fisheries policy.

Inaugurating an ice plant at Malpe fisheries harbour in Udupi district on Saturday, he said the policy would help fishermen to a greater extent in Karnataka. Apart from doubling insurance amount to fishermen, there is a plan to provide loans to fisherwomen at 4 per cent interest rate.

He urged the authorities of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company to set up high-mast lamps at the fisheries harbour in Malpe.

The Karnataka Minister for Fisheries and Horticulture, Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty, who was present on the occasion, said that fishermen would get some encouraging news in the State Budget. The Budget will be tabled in the State Legislature on March 20. Mr Kumaraswamy, who inaugurated the newly constructed court complex in Udupi, said that the Government would hold seminars for lawyers through Law Academy. The Government will also provide stipend to young lawyers from rural areas for a year to help them sustain.
