There is good news for LPG consumers in Andhra Pradesh. Come April 1, the rate will be down by Rs 25 on every cylinder. Which means, the consumer will have to pay around Rs 260 per cylinder against the present Rs 285.
Announcing this, the State Minister for Commercial Taxes, Mr K. Ramakrishna, said the decision would mean the Government has to forego Rs 140 crore revenue.
The reduction of prices has been an election promise of the present Congress (I)-led Government in the State. The Government had recommended to the Centre to include LPG under the Central Sales Tax, which levies 4 per cent duty.
Currently, LPG attracts value-added tax (VAT), at the rate of 12.5 per cent, which Andhra Pradesh has been implementing since April 1, 2005. Because of this, the prices had gone up to Rs 285 per cylinder.
Mr Ramakrishna said at the end of February the Department had mopped up collections of Rs 10,912 crore, which is an increase of Rs 1,360 crore over the same period last fiscal. The target for the fiscal 2005-06 is Rs 12,700 crore.
The growth rates in VAT collections in the State has been 15 per cent compared to 9.5 per cent in Karnataka, 8.2 per cent in Kerala, 13.2 per cent in Maharastra and 9.2 per cent in West Bengal, he added.
