Visakhapatnam , March 20

The Rotary Club, in association with the Union Government, has succeeded in eradicating polio from South India, but there is still incidence in North India, according to Mr M.C Das, District Rotary governor. The Rotary district covers six districts from Srikakulam to Krishna.

At a press meet here on Friday, he said no case was reported last year (2005) from South India and none so far , but 66 cases were reported from North India last year and 12 this year, with Uttar Pradesh and Bihar being the worst-hit States.

He said that polio eradication was the major objective of the club. The Rotary International had given Rs 250 crore to the Government for the purpose.
