`Do not ignore domestic market'

Our Bureau

Chennai , March 21

The domestic market for software is "as high as the export market", noted Mr M Madhavan Nambiar, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

The country's software exports are at $20 billion and are showing a healthy growth of 30 per cent. They should reach $50 billion over the next five years, Mr Nambiar said, delivering the inaugural address at `Indiasoft 2006', an annual event of the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council.

He observed that many multi-national companies had "recognised this fact and that is why they have set up their plants in India for hardware and embedded software."

He also said that an "emerging trend" was multi-vendoring by large multinational corporations. ABNAmro and GE have gone for multi-vendoring of their BPO operations.

"We would like to ensure that the small and medium enterprises in software sector get more of the action in our export efforts and exhibitions such as Indiasoft," he said.
