Security for working women

This is with reference to "Financial independence and a dose of self-defence" (Business Line, March 13): As media reports cases of women executives raped and killed on their way home from work, personal security for working women assumes great importance.

Stringent workplace practices tailored to security needs can make all the difference. Companies should identify the safest routes for transport; conduct background checks for all transport contractors, and their staff, and train their own security staff. Human Resource Departments can work out ways to offer helplines and specialised assistance to women employees.

Ultimately, women need to be cautious by being aware and making smart decisions. Self-defence classes can be a great idea for building confidence.
