Mangalore , April 16

Cashew exports from the country were 1,14,143 tonnes valued at Rs 2,515 crore during 2005-06 as against 1,26,667 tonnes valued at Rs 2,709 crore in the previous fiscal, registering a decline of 7.16 per cent in value terms, according to the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI).

Marginal decline

According to Mr Walter D'Souza, Chairman of CEPCI, the marginal decline in exports is due to 15 per cent fall in price of cashew during the last quarter of 2005-06 and consequent request from the overseas buyers to postpone part of shipments, originally scheduled for March 2006 to April-June 2006.

The unexpected strike at Kochi port during March resulted in part of the exports meant for that month carried over to April 2006. "If not for these unexpected circumstances, the last year's figures could have been achieved. It is expected that the correction will be made during the fiscal 2006-07, and cashew exports will have a net growth this year," he said.

Marketing initiatives

To boost cashew exports, CEPCI has drawn up various initiatives. Mr D'Souza said the first-ever `Global Buyer-Seller Meet' for cashew would be hosted by CEPCI at the Kovalam Leela Beach Resort in Thiruvananthapuram from September 15-17.

Cashew importers from over 30 countries will deliberate on the marketing strategies for cashew in a bid to give the system a paradigm shift. A blueprint for global cashew promotion is expected to emerge out of this meet with a result-oriented `Vision 2015', he said. The meet is expected to generate additional exports of the order of Rs 300 crore.

"It is expected that the cashew exports will register an aggregate of Rs 3,000 crore during the current fiscal," he said.

Various other measures initiated by the national board of the CEPCI include promotional activities in export potential centres in India and `Made in India' brand promotion in West Asian countries to take advantage of value addition in consumer packs. The thrust is also on exports to untapped destinations in Asia in general and Pakistan in particular, he said.

Two cashew festivals organised by the Goa Cashew Manufacturers' Association and Karnataka Cashew Manufacturers' Association have been given proper direction and need-based assistance.
