Final decision at Montreal meet on May 14; Egypt, China other contenders

Mangalore , May 9

India is bidding for rights of hosting the World Treenut Convention in 2008. International Nut Council, headquartered at Reus in Spain, is the organiser of the convention.

A press release by the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) said the World Treenut Convention would be held at Montreal in Canada from May 12 to 14. Mr Walter D'Souza, CEPCI Chairman, would lead the Indian delegation at the convention. Besides the CEPCI Secretary, Mr Sasi Varma, the Indian delegation will have seven other members from different parts of the country.

Bid short-listed

"As a nation, this convention assumes importance since India is bidding for rights of hosting the 2008 convention for the first time in the history of INC.

At the recently held board meeting in Rome, Indian bid has been short-listed along with China and Egypt. The final decision will be taken in Montreal on May 14," the release said.

India has an important role at INC, as it has 67 per cent share in processing and 33 per cent in consumption of cashew.

Mr D'Souza would present the Indian viewpoints, the release said.

Global leaders in the nut-food processing industry from about 100 countries will participate in the three-day deliberations in Montreal to address issues such as generic, food and health promotion, consumer welfare, organic farming, value addition, technological upgradation, research and development, packaging, global treenut trade, and networking.

The convention, one of the largest in the world in food processing industry, draws participations from nut-food processors of almonds, cashew, pistachios, hazelnuts, macadamia, Brazilnuts, walnuts, peanuts, morels, apricots, pinenuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds.

Buyer-seller meet

The release said the CEPCI would be organising the first global buyer-seller meet in September at Thiruvananthapuram, and the Montreal convention would be the ideal launch pad to register maximum participation from all stakeholders in the industry from all parts of the world.

The buyer-seller meet is expected to generate Rs 450 crore of additional exports of cashew from India, the release added.
