Infrastructure States - Kerala IT cos assured of good facilities at Vizag Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , May 12 IT companies will be given land and provided other facilities to set up offices here and pave the way for emergence of Vizag as a major IT destination, according to the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. He was speaking at a public meeting here on Friday after laying the foundation stone for a Wipro centre at TB hospital junction on the national highway. The company was allotted seven acres of land at the junction. Work would begin shortly at the site. Satyam Computers was also allotted land at the same junction and work is in progress.
Land allotment
The Chief Minister said several IT companies had been allotted lands here in a bid to develop it as a major IT hub after Hyderabad. "Visakhapatnam is bound to grow as a major industrial and IT centre. The capacity of the Vizag Steel Plant is being doubled from 3 million tonnes to 6 million tonnes. The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, will visit the plant on May 20 and formally inaugurate the work on the expansion project,'' he said. The Chief Minister said his Government would focus on irrigation projects to develop agriculture in the State, but at the same time industry would also be given due importance, with emphasis on employment generation. Mr A. Lakshman Rao, representing Wipro Technologies, said the company would initially invest Rs 25 crore in Vizag and gradually expand its operations. "We will initially generate 750 jobs and in the next five years or so 5,000 jobs will be created. We will invest Rs 200 crore or so. We want more land here to expand our operations. We expect a positive response from the State Government. It is our second centre in the State, after Hyderabad. For the first time, we are setting up two centres in a State. It shows the importance we attach to Andhra Pradesh,'' he said. Earlier, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for a cancer hospital and research centre, to be set up at a cost of Rs 25 crore, by NRIs at MVP Colony here.
