April phone subscriber growth

The subscriber base for telephony services in India continued to maintain its growth trend during April 2006, adding 4.61 million subscribers overall, including 3.88 million mobile subscribers."With the addition of 3.88 million mobile subscribers during April 2006, the number of mobile subscribers has reached 96.92 million as compared to 93.04 million in March 2006," a Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) release said. At the end of April 2006, the total fixed-line telephone subscribers were about 47.51 million (against 46.78 million in March), taking the combined base of mobile and fixed telephony subscribers to 144.43 million. "Broadband connections have also started to grow steadily since the beginning of 2006. During the month of April 2006, approximately 1 lakh additional broadband connections were provided taking the total broadband connections in the country beyond 1.4 million," TRAI added.
