Education States - Other States `B-schools must focus on research work' Our Bureau
Kolkata , May 12 Business schools in India need to focus more on research work, and have better faculty to train the researchers of tomorrow, according to Prof. Michael Lawson, Associate Dean of the School of Business, Boston University, US. Speaking to members of The Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) at an interactive session on `Management challenges for Indian corporates and identification of skill gaps' here today, Prof Lawson said: "Business schools need to do more research work. Businessmen, unfortunately, do not look at academic journals as something they can learn from," adding that the rising costs of hiring faculty to train researchers was a great hindrance in this regard. According to him, Indian business schools must also focus on researching and writing cases on Indian enterprises rather than learning from the experiences of enterprises located in far away geographies.
Select domains
In this regard, Prof Lawson said business schools must concentrate more on select domains. First, their focus should be in "creating leaders and not just investment bankers and consultants". They should also incorporate "team learning leading to team building" as part of the curriculum. The curriculum must also focus on "entrepreneurship leading to innovation and then to commercialisation". There should also be integration of career plans into the curriculum.
