Alliances & Joint Ventures Industry & Economy - Readymade Garments Marketing - Brands Swiss apparel brand plans tie-up with Gangotri G. Gurumurthy
Coimbatore , May 13 After Switcher, the European basic apparel brand from Switzerland which some years ago opted to work with local collaborator from Tirupur in co-branding `Switcher' garments in India, another Swiss fashion apparel brand, Trailer, is now bidding for a similar venture to explore the Indian market for its range of garments in association with a local partner. Trailer has chosen to sew up its "strategic alliance" with the Coimbatore-based Gangotri Textiles, the producers of the Tibre trouser brand that is seeking to penetrate the European market. The Trailer-Gangotri alliance is expected to lead to a joint brand promotion by the two at an appropriate time. The $20-million Trailer, which has a network of garment retailing within Switzerland and supplies its apparel collections to the boutiques in Canada, Germany and Scandinavian countries, is known for fabric and product innovation in both woven and knitted tops and pants intended for the high-end fashion garment segments. Mr Ruedi Schappi, Director of Trailer, told Business Line: "We will be providing retail outlets for Tibre in Europe and Gangotri will enable Trailer to have its distribution channels opened up for the Indian market, besides outsourcing from Gangotri's production lines." Started in 1990, Trailer is seen as an apparel brand for the youth in the 18-30 age group. More than 70 per cent of its apparel range is focused on women. Right now, Tibre is for men. "Since we are not in the same line of product manufacture, we will add to synergy to each other," said Mr Schappi. The tie-up with Trailer will enable Gangotri obtain the knowhow in innovative product designing as well as the feedback on the market. "Trailer has its own garment design centre and has expertise in market networking. Gangotri plans to shortly introduce men's shirts and has plans to enter women's apparel too. In this backdrop, the joint venture will be mutually beneficial," said Mr Manoj Kumar Tibrewal, Managing Director of Gangotri.
