Global recognition for Indian rural transformation model

Kolkata , May 13

ITC's e-Choupal programme, which enables over 3.5 million farmers to access crop-specific and customised information in their native village habitat and language, has won the Stockholm Challenge Award 2006 in the Economic Development category. The award was presented on May 11 at a glittering ceremony at the Stockholm City Hall, the same place where the annual Nobel Prize awards ceremony is held.

Global recognition

According to an official release issued by the company here today, this particular award crowns a series of global recognition for ITC's e-Choupal, making it the most lauded IT-based rural transformation model.

The project was awarded the ICC-UNDP-IBLF World Business Award in 2004, for furthering United Nations' Millennium Development Goals, and the Development Gateway Award in 2005. Incidentally, the project is also a case study at the Harvard Business School.

Development goals

Commenting on this, Mr Y.C. Deveshwar, Chairman of ITC, said that "recognitions like the Stockholm Challenge Award provide us the impetus to pursue our sustainable development goals with added vigour". He pointed out that ITC e-Choupal was playing a transformational role in turning rural communities into vibrant economic organisations, by fostering inclusive growth and enhancing their wealth creation capabilities.

Improving efficiency

The e-Choupal, according to the company, also creates a two-way direct marketing channel for rural India, eliminating wasteful information and multiple handling, thus significantly reducing transaction costs and improving logistics efficiency.
