Legrand eyes wiring device segment

Ajita Shashidhar

Bets big on booming market

Mumbai , May 15

French electrical switches brand Legrand is all set to increase its presence in the wiring device segment this year. Mr Benoit Lecuyer, Managing Director, Legrand India, said that the company plans to increase its market share in the segment from seven per cent to double digits within the next couple of years. "Worldwide, Legrand is the market leader in the wiring device segment apart from India, where we are well-known for our protection device systems," he said.

Growth prospects

He added that Legrand India aims to step up its net turnover by 28 per cent this year. With the Indian real estate and tourism market booming, Mr Lecuyer said that there was a growing demand for high-end automated solutions such as light dimmers in India. "There are a lot of residential and commercial complexes as well as hotels coming up in India, and hence the demand for sleek switches are on the rise."

The premium switch segment, according to him, is growing by almost 20-30 per cent every year. The market leader in this category is Anchor, which has a market share of 45 per cent. The company has a two-tier distribution network, which comprises of the professional network that includes investors, consultants and stockists, as well as one which caters to the small multi-brand stores.

The company is now in talks with home décor stores to start off a shop-in-shop format. The company has also launched a new corporate campaign, which according to Mr Lecuyer has tried to position Legrand as a brand whose products are simple to use, magical and versatile. "Our focus is to ease life," he said. Legrand India, according to Mr Lecuyer, is also looking at strengthening its position in the voice date image market.

Market growth

"It is a booming market and is currently growing by 40 per cent. We currently have just a two per cent market share, but we are looking at multiplying our turnover in this segment by at least three times" he said.
