Discovery to step up India focus

Bangalore , May 15

Discovery Networks India plans to introduce more Indian shows by year-end.

"We have commissioned a few series on food and travel on Travel & Living channel," said Mr Rajiv Bakshi, Associate Director, Marketing and Communications, Discovery Networks India, at the sidelines of a launch of a show called Hell's Kitchen on Friday.

Hell's Kitchen is a cookery show with a different tang to it. The reality series is based on 12 young aspiring chefs.

The central character is Mr Gordon Ramsay, a renowned chef from England with a fiery temper. The 12 chefs are put to work under this perfectionist to open a world-class restaurant at California called Hell's Kitchen.

The prize is what every professional chef wants — their very own restaurant. But the journey is rough with Mr Ramsay piling abuses and tempers flaring in the kitchen.

The result is a show that mixes culinary talent with episodes of terror, tears, tantrums and triumphs as participants learn the value of team spirit and working under pressure.

"In India, restaurateurs were treated like beggars and chefs like bawarchis. Only recently has the industry matured," said Mr A.D. Singh, Managing Director, Olive Beach, a Bangalore-based restaurant that associated with the channel.

The series will premiere on Discovery Travel & Living from May 15 to May 19 at 9 pm.
