Review meeting on farm sector

New Delhi, May 16

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, today reviewed the country's overall agricultural situation and problems faced by the farming community. The meeting, also attended by the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia and the Member (Agriculture), Dr Abhijit Sen, dwelt on steps necessary to revitalise Krishi Vigyan Kendras. This followed concerns raised by Dr Singh on the status of agricultural research and extension support to farmers.

Earlier, Dr Sen made a detailed presentation on the various new initiatives of the Government, including the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and Bharat Nirma, while also taking note of the significant step-up in farm credit and reduction in interest rates on agricultural loans and irrigation investment.
