Plans to renegotiate fresh deal with Japan

New Delhi , May 16

India is considering long-term iron ore export contract with China and is also planning to renegotiate a fresh long-term supply contract with Japan.

"We are thinking of entering into a minimum five-year agreement for iron ore exports to China in view of the growing demand there, after ascertaining their need," said the Minister for Steel, Chemicals and Fertilisers, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, here on Tuesday.

"In case of Japan, we are planning to renegotiate a fresh deal keeping in mind the interests of the Indian steel producers," he said.

Mr Paswan said a high-level delegation with representatives from the steel and commerce ministries and officials from NMDC and KIOCL would meet their Japanese counterparts to find a solution to the ore export.

Earlier inaugurating the Steel Outlook conference organised by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) in co-operation with the Steel Ministry, Mr Paswan said that the steel industry is faced with complex issues related to availability of raw materials, energy, environment and the ongoing negotiations at the WTO.
