The Hindu Business Line : Govt may revisit food parks concept

The Government is considering to revisit the concept of food parks to decentralise their working and also to de-link wines and beer from alcoholic drinks under the excise law to give a fillip to fruit-based drink projects near production centres, said Dr P.I. Suvrathan, Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries.

While addressing the annual general meeting of the Confederation of Food Trade and Industry on Tuesday, he said the current dispensation in the 52-odd Food Parks around the country has not worked. He mooted the idea of decentralised working of the parks and setting up processing centres in proximity to farms and urban towns where the potential to employ local youth and marketing to the consumers was high.

"We would try to encourage the state governments set up fruit drinks-based units, which use the farm surpluses so that the income levels of the people and employment goes up," he said.

The Government would like to effect an automatic and transparent arrangement that would enable prescription for clear standards and quality of food so that clean street food could be consumed by the general populace.
